Project concept.
Colchester at present is undergoing a large amount of regeneration work. St Botolph’s bus depot area is no exception, the area, which lies to the side of the Visual Arts Facility construction will see its current dilapidated buildings rejuvenated and turned into an artist’s quarter. The First Stop Café that is part of the bus depot cluster of buildings has sat on the site for more than 48 years and as part of the regeneration plan is currently awaiting demolition.
During this interim period and in a considered external space I have chosen to construct an installation at the First Stop Café that will bring colour into spaces that people occupy every day.
Natural daylight threw strong shadows into the room at various times of the day and in order to fix time at a certain point the negative space was painted onto the café floor. Coloured vinyl was placed on the windows flooding the cafe with colour.
This installation was made possible by working in partnership with Colchester Borough Council and local businesses.
Influenced by the installation further paintings, photographs and light box images have been made and will be exhibited at the Minories art gallery in January 2010.
